Chasing Cayambe

I always have a thing for Cayambe, which I think is the most beautiful volcano in Ecuador, out of the dozens that they have here.

We have taken the way to Papallacta at least a dozen times, it is one of my favorite routes – the scenery is just amazing, reminded me of the Pyrenees in Spain, so rugged, dry with cattle farming yet with the Andean touch of the polylapis bushes.

The route is in the “Cayambe-Coca” reserve, I never understood why until this time around. It was a perfectly clear day, blue sky and no clouds. That was when I start noticing that there was a snow-capped mountain behind the clouds in afar. “It is Cayambe!” I shouted with excitement. Then the chasing started. I was like a paparazzi just keep snapping films - on my favorite volcano. I was in awe of the beauty – the shimmering pure white from the reflection of the snow, the fact that we were in the middle of the equator and the peak was capped with sow, and it was so high that you could see if from all angles.

So I chased Cayambe - til it disappeared us in the Amazon.
