The Lasso Way

Ted Lasso dropped the finale (not just for the season but for the entire show) last week, ended on a high note. I bawled my eyes out as usual. It’s probably the best one yet as far as tv series goes. I knew that it was a good one when I found myself pausing the show at times just to jot down the lines. Here are my favourites:

You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It's a goldfish. You know why? It's got a 10-second memory.

Be curious, not judgmental.

Your body is like day-old rice. If it ain’t warmed up properly, something real bad could happen.

I think that you might be so sure that you’re one in a million, that sometimes you forget that out there you’re just one in 11.

If the Internet has taught us anything, it's that sometimes it's easier to speak our minds anonymously.

If you care about someone, and you got a little love in your heart, there ain't nothing you can't get through together.

I promise you there is something worse out there than being sad, and that's being alone and being sad. Ain't no one in this room alone.

There's two buttons I never like to hit: that's panic and snooze.

If God would have wanted games to end in a tie, she wouldn't have invented numbers.

I think things come into our lives to help us get from one place to a better one.

When it comes to locker rooms, I like 'em just like my mother's bathing suits. I only wanna see 'em in one piece, you hear?

Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn’t it? If you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong.

He had demons and yet they never stop him from searching for beauty Because when you find beauty, you find inspiration

Football is life. But the beautiful life is total football.
Total Football is about letting go of your baggage and trusting your intuition. It’s jazz. It’s Motown. It’s Mamet. It’s Pinter. It’s Einstein. It’s Keurig. It’s Gaga. It’s my mother proudly displaying her vibrator on the bedside table! It’s about throwing off the constraints put upon you by society and by yourselves. We all know football is life. But a beautiful life is Total Football.

Anger will only weaken you. If you really want to piss off the people who did this, forgive them. Forgive them. Big whoop. … Don’t fight back. Fight forward.

Just because we own these teams doesn't mean they belong to us. And I don't want to be part of something that could possibly destroy this beautiful game. Because I would hate for all those little kids and grown-ups out there to ever lose access to that beautiful, passionate part of themselves.

That is the thing about being a parent. Sometimes you lose and sometimes you win, but most of the time you just tie. All we can do is keep playing.

Air conditioning is a privilege not a right.

Eat, Pray, Love style, right? Well, more like Drink, Sleep, Fսck.

Change isn't about trying to be perfect. Perfection sucks. Perfect is boring. Human beings are never gonna be perfect. The best we can do is to keep asking for help and accepting it when you can. And if you keep on doing that, you'll always be moving towards better.

Believe.

Peculiar Joya del Modernisme

Ca I'Ordal

Stumped upon this UNESCO patrimonial site while staying with my in-laws. We walked through the urbanized new town of Sant Boi, crossed the dried-up river to Santa Coloma de Cervelló and found ourselves in this hidden gem of Gaudí. From the residential buildings to the unfinished church, the Modernisme (Modernismo Catalán or Catalan Art Nouveau) is in full display at the Colonía Güell, designed for Eusebí Güell’s factory workers in the late 1800’s. Not to mention that it just so happened that my in-laws got married here at the Crypt (Cripta de la Colonia Güell) 51 years ago.

Messi y Su Valija!

Wanted to pay tribute to the GOAT since December 18 (like the rest of the world) after all the cheering, screaming, nail-biting and finally crying in relief. Millions of messages poured in all over the internet, social medias and messages from celebrities to regular Joe to express how they felt about this unbelievable the world cup final, the sensations and most of all, Messi.

I've been following the number 10 since I could remember, he was already a Barça player. Oddly, I saw him in live for the first time not in Camp Nou but on June 10, 2009 in the Estadio Atahualpa in Quito. I had just moved to Quito 2 months before that. It was Ecuador vs. Argentina for the Eliminatorias CONMEBOL. I wasn't there only to see Messi but Don Diego (yes, Diego Maradona, he was the coach of the Albicelestes at the time). It was pissing rain and it hailed at some point of the game. Ecuador won 2-0 Argentina. It was cold and freezing yet the stadium went wild.

How time flies! Messi was then the La Masia prodigy and 13 years later, he was crowned indisputably the best football player at all time. He is just "a simple man" on "the top of world". He hasn't changed a thing, not even his argentine accent. And Hernán Casciari told the story of this quiet boy from Rosario the best with his radio interview on " Messi y Su Valija":

Messi’s suitcase

<Authorized Spanish to English translation by Antonella Perazzoni of an extract from La valija de Lionel, a book by Hernán Casciari.>

On Saturday mornings in 2003, Catalonia’s TV3 was broadcasting live the matches of Barça’s youth teams. And in the chats of Argentine emigrants, two questions were frequently asked: how to make dulce de leche by boiling cans of condensed milk, and at what time the fifteen-year-old boy from Rosario who scored goals in every game played.

In the 2003–2004 season, Lionel Messi played thirty-seven matches and scored thirty-five goals: the morning rating on Catalan TV on Saturdays was higher than at night. People were already talking about aquest nen in the hairdressers, in the bars, and in the stands of Camp Nou.

The only one who didn’t talk was him: in the post-match interviews, the teenager answered all the questions with a yes, no or thank you, and then looked down. We Argentine emigrants would have preferred a chatty guy, but here was a good thing: when he put together a sentence, he swallowed the s’s and said: ful instead of falta.

We discovered, with great relief, that he was one of us, one of those who had the suitcase unpacked.

There were two kinds of immigrants: those who kept the suitcase in the closet as soon as they arrived in Spain, said vale, tío and hostias. And those of us who had the suitcase unpacked kept the traditions, such as mate or yeísmo. We said yuvia, we said caye.

Time began to pass. Messi became the undisputed 10 of Barça. The Leagues, the King’s Cups, and the Champions League came. And both he and us, the immigrants, knew that the accent was the hardest thing to hold on to.

It was hard for us all to keep saying gambeta instead of regate, but at the same time, we knew that it was our final trench. And Messi was our leader in that battle. The kid who didn’t talk kept our way of talking alive.

So, all of a sudden, we were not only enjoying the best player we had ever seen, but we were also monitoring him to make sure he didn’t slip a Spanish slang in interviews.

In addition to his goals, we celebrated that, in the locker room, he always had his termo and mate. Suddenly he was the most famous human being in Barcelona but, just like us, he never stopped being an Argentinian in another country.

His Argentinian flag at the celebrations of every European Cup. His attitude when he went to the Olympic Games to win gold for Argentina without his club’s permission. His Christmas always spent in Rosario, even though he had to play in January at Camp Nou. Everything he did was a wink for us, for those of us who, in 2000, had arrived with him in Barcelona.

It is difficult to explain how much he made our lives happier for those of us who lived far from home. How he took us out of the boredom of a monotonous society and gave us a sense of purpose. How he helped us not to lose our orientation Messi made us happy in such a serene and natural way, and so much our own, that when the insults from Argentina began to arrive, we could not understand it.

Cold chested. You only care about money. Stay there. You don’t feel the shirt. You are Galician, not Argentinean. If you ever quit, think again. Mercenary.

I lived fifteen years away from Argentina, and I can’t think of a more horrible nightmare than hearing voices of contempt from the place you love most in the world.

Neither more unbearable pain than hearing, in your son’s voice, the phrase Messi heard from his son Thiago: “Dad, why are they killing you in Argentina?”

My breath catches when I think of that phrase from a kid to a father. And I know that an ordinary person would end up overrun by resentment.

That’s why Messi’s resignation in 2016 from the Argentine national team was almost a relief for us immigrants. We couldn’t see him suffer like that, because we knew how much he loved his country and the efforts he made not to break the umbilical cord.

When he resigned, it was as if, all of a sudden, Messi had decided to take his hands out of the fire for a while. Not only his own. We were also burnt by those criticisms.

That’s where, I think, the most unusual event in recent soccer occurred: the afternoon in 2016 when Lionel got tired of the insults and decided to quit, a fifteen-year-old boy wrote him a letter on Facebook that ended with: “Think about staying. But stay to have fun, which is what these people want to take away from you.” Seven years later, Enzo Fernández, the author of the letter, turned out to be Lionel Messi’s revelation player in the World Cup.

Messi returned to the National Team (he said so himself) so that those kids who sent him letters would not believe that giving up in life was an option.

And when he came back, he won everything he was missing and closed the mouths of his detractors. Although some found him “for the first time vulgar” in front of a mic. It was when he said: Qué mirá’, bobo, andá payá. For us, those who monitored his accent for fifteen years, it was a perfect phrase, because he swallowed all the s’s and his yeísmo is still untouched.

We are happy to confirm that he is still the same who helped us to be happy when we were far away.

Now some of us immigrants are back; others remained. And we all enjoyed watching Messi return home with the World Cup in his unpacked suitcase. This epic story would never have happened if the fifteen-year-old Lionel had hidden his suitcase in the closet. If as a kid he had surrendered to the vale and the hostia, tío. But he never forgot his accent or his place in the world.

That is why the whole Humanity wished Lionel to triumph so strongly. No one had ever seen, at the top of the world, a simple man.

And yesterday, as every year, Messi returned from Europe to spend Christmas with his family in Rosario, to say hello to his neighbors. His traditions don’t change.

The only thing that changes is what he brought us in his suitcase.

mi pequeño paraiso

Illinizas the snow-capped South 5245m and rigged North 5126m

We have always called it our “pequeño paraiso”, this hidden gem in the Andes sandwiched between the two more famous (or notorious) touristic countries (Colombia and Peru). It’s the place where I could truly relaxed, disconnected and sleep well. Not sure what it is – maybe the climate (the eternal Spring of 15-20c), maybe all different shades of green from different cultivations, maybe the gigantic snowcapped volcanoes we wake up to every morning, maybe the quietness, maybe the slowness (people really take their time here), maybe the sun, which rises at 6 and sets at 6 all year around, maybe the fact that the rest of world races at thousand miles an hour but nothing seems to change the speed of life here in the Andes. Even the recently erupted Cotopaxi had welcome us when we landed by standing still on our way out to the airport.

It almost never fails, the altitude (2800m/9200ft) always leaves us out of breath after walking just a few blocks in Quito yet it never deters us from strolling and inhaling the fresh cold mountain air.

We did a excursion out to the Illinizas, the infamous twin peaks and the crater nearby, Quilotoa (3194m). 5 hours on a horse (Laura, who I called the “stupid dog"), I could barely feel my bottom. The Andean páramo is just breath-taking. It brought back all the nostalgia and reminded me why it was our peqeño paraiso at the first place. We’ve lived in 8 countries have trotted all over the world, and truly, nothing comes close to the Andean landscape. It will always be our pequeño paraiso or shall I say Ecuador, Mi Encando!

Happiness = Reality - Expectations

What a treat! I still cannot get over the fact that I got to see and listen to the two artists (from two very distinct genres) that I admire so dearly in one concert at the Bowl.

I got the tickets months ago, thought that it would be nice to take the kids to the Bowl to have the “immersive” Encanto experience with live orchestra and singing from the original casts (they loved the movie and had watched it gazillion times during the pandemic). Little did I know that it would be such a “full” experience with one surprise after another.

“My name is Lin-Manuel Miranda…” I screamed, couldn’t believe that I was seeing THE composer “live” opening Encanto. Such a refreshing and poignant introduction to the show...

Together with Oscar-nominated composer Germaine Franco, we are responsible for the music Encanto. I wanted to be part of the Disney’s animation ever since I was nine-years-old, and Sebastian the Crab started singing Under the Sea. To this day, Sebastian is still my favorite Disney’s composer. So I am incredible proud to be a part of the Walt Disney animation 60th feature film and thrilled to help celebrate Walt Disney Company’s 100 year anniversary.

…see your own family in the Madrigal family and little bit of our own stories in these songs…I don’t think any of us anticipated a global phenomenon and a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Now, tonight, we have the evening of the firsts. We made this film during the pandemic, so this is the first time the original casts have sung these songs together at the same stage at the same time live. Tonight we are for the first time, we are joining by amazing Colombian artist Andres Cepeda and the immortal Carlos Vives. And selfishly, I’ve of Hollywood Bowl and concerts my whole life but I am from Washington so I wanted to tell you, this is my first time ever at the Hollywood Bowl. Thank you for being here. So are you guys ready? I want the show to be very special tonight, so we built a Casita! (then the Casita emerged from the background)

Enjoy Encanto!

Along with all the popular songs from Encanto, it came another surprise with Carlos Vives showed up in a head-to-toe purple suit performing Columbia, Mi Encanto. What a coincidence! I just remembered that Ninja asked me in the car an hour before the show, “Mom, do you think Carlos Vives is going to be there?” “I don’t think so because he wouldn’t fly all the way just for a song,” I said. But he did. He came all the way to perform one song. A true Colombian compatriot, he must have been so proud and touched by how Encanto has been successfully represented his country and culture to the rest of the world that he agreed to be part of the celebration.

The magic realism experience ended with a full-length firework, the typical kind of pageantry of Disney, a total cherry on top for all of us. And did I mention that the concert will be on Disney+ for the holiday season? It means that we were on “Live TV”!

What a magical night! It was much more magical and special also because we didn’t expect all these perks. As they say, happiness equals reality minus expectations. Life is good.

thru the window of Guayasamin

It has always been my sanctuary, for years. I feel disconnected, relaxed and completely at peace waking up above the clouds overlooking the volcanos in the Andes.

I'd say the same, "Mantengan una luz encendido, que siempre voy a volver."

ya no la hay

In the consulate of Ecuador renewing my long expired passport. They called on me after all the documents were reviewed.

Funcionario: Tenemos una pequeña observación Sra. Yu, a su lugar de nacimiento le pondremos “China” porque solo hay la opción de “China”, ya no hay la opción de “Republica de China Taiwán.”
Me: Qué? Seguro? Pero mi cédula pone “Taiwan”, sí debería de haber esta opción.
Funcionario: Ya no la hay, con esta nueva administración (Lasso), el Ecuador solo reconoce a China. Ahora solo hay la opción de “China”.
Me: (I turned to Fer, in shock) did you hear that? 😱
Speechless. It hit me - my birth country is no longer an option to be selected as birth place because the Ecuadorian government succumbed to the pressure of the authoritarian state for economic reasons.
But who is it to blame? Considering all the future petroleum of Ecuador was sold to China years ago.
Sigh.
